Independent TD Maureen O'Sullivan has declared she will run for the position of Ceann Comhairle in a secret vote by TDs tomorrow.
Ms O'Sullivan is in a strong position to be elected as long as she can secure transfers from other candidates.
Fianna Fáil has opted to run party whip Séan Ó Fearghaíl, while Sinn Féin is to field its health spokesman Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin.
Fine Gael may run a number of candidates, including Wicklow/East Carlow TD Andrew Doyle and Kildare North deputy Bernard Durkan.
Ms O'Sullivan announced her candidature on the 34th anniversary of the so-called Gregory deal with Taoiseach Charles Haughey.
She won Mr Gregory's seat as an Independent in Dublin Central in a by-election following his death in 2009.
Ms O'Sullivan also noted her announcement came on International Women's Day.
