Independent Senator Averil Power said she will be fighting it out to the end for a Dail seat in Dublin Bay North.
The former Fianna Fail member left the party shortly after the same sex marriage referendum last year.
She decided to stand in Dublin Bay North as an Independent - a constituency among the few which has been branded the 'group of death'.
Fianna Fail's Sean Haughey topped the poll according to tallies - a first count was still expected tonight.
"It looks like I'm going to be fighting to the final bell. I'm delighted actually with how well I've done.
"I've come seventh on the tally - we haven't had a first count yet. But I'm only 450 votes behind the person who is placed fifth which is Tommy Broughan, who has been a TD for this constituency for 25 years. So I'm really really happy to have come that close to Tommy.
"I'm over 1600 votes ahead of Terence Flanagan who topped the poll last time out in Dublin North East. I think we've just had a great campaign. I've had an amazing team who worked really really hard and we're going to be fighting it out to the end for the next two days by the look of things.
"There's 20 candidates for five seats so transfers are going to be absolutely critical
"it's all to play for in Dublin Bay North," she added.
