'Massive' investment in public transport and cycling in capital - Green Party reveal plan

Cheaper public transport fares for students and allocating 10pc of Dublin’s transport budget to cycling infrastructure are among the key measures proposed by the Green Party to reduce traffic gridlock in the capital.

Launching its Dublin Transport plan this morning, party leader Eamon Ryan also said that two-thirds of all capital investment in transport would go towards buses, cycling and walking infrastructure and one-third for roads, a reversal of the Government’s current transport policies.

The party also proposes spending €582m on three bus rapid transport (BRT) routes in the city - Blanchardstown to UCD, Clongriffin to Tallaght and Swords to the city centre.

It said the measures were needed to prevent additional gridlock.

“Dublin City is about to gridlock,” Mr Ryan said. “Tomorrow’s Luas strikes will show just how vital public transport is.

“The M50 is operating above its safe operational capacity already, and we’ll have real traffic problems in the years ahead unless we provide immediate alternatives to driving a car.

“The Green Party are proposing to invest massively in bus, cycling and walking infrastructure to solve this problem. This is desperately needed, since extension of rail capacity, like the DART Underground and Metro North, has been postponed for a decade by the current Government.”

The party wants 10pc of all trips in the city to be made by bike, and proposes measures to attract students onto public transport.

Students will be able to avail of the same rates for weekly, monthly and annual tickets as are currently offered to employees under the Taxsaver scheme.

This will save them €646 a year, it claims.

Measures for rural transport will be outlined later today.
