THE Minister for Justice Frances Fitzgerald has refused to rule out serving as a Minister in a Fine Gael/Fianna Fail coalition.
During an interview with Chris Donoghue on Newstalk Breakfast, the Minister said her preference was the re-election of the current government.
“You have to look at the partnership that we’ve had with Labour, and you have to look at the fruits of that partnership and the outcomes.
“The country has been turned around - why at this point would you even consider a party that destroyed the country?
‘I have no wish or intention to be part of a government with Fianna Fail.”
However presenter Chris Donoghue pressed her on the issue, saying:
“That’s not my question, my question is not wishes or intentions. Will you rule out ever serving as a Minister in a Fianna Fail/Fine Gael coalition?”
However the Dublin Mid-West TD continued to avoid firmly ruling it out.
“That question really isn’t the question that needs to be asked at the minute”, she said.
Chris the interjected, saying: “Oh no, it’s the question you don’t want, I take that.”
She then reiterated her desire to see the re-election of the current government.
“We absolutely want this government, and we’re asking the people to support the Fine Gael-Labour government.
“What I’m saying to you Chris is my principle, is the principle I want to state, as opposed to go beyond the election, which is entirely the will of the people, what I’m saying to you is my principle is that our values is to say to the people that we want the people to consider re-electing a Fine Gael-Labour government.
“What you can take from what I’m saying is what we are putting to the people is the record of this government.
"It is arrogant to go to a scenario after a n election when at this point we are leading up to an election.”
However the Minister had no issue in ruling out forming government with Sinn Fein.
Donoghue ended the interview bay asking her: “Do you see the way you answered that question compared to the Fianna Fail question?”
