Limerick Independent Dáil contender Richard O'Donoghue can lay claim to a first: his very own election campaign song on the internet has gone viral.

The Ballingary man only decided a week before Christmas to stand for the Dáil after a prolonged dispute about candidate strategy with his former party, Fianna Fáil. But on New Year's Eve he got a boost via a phone call from his wife's cousins, the Twomeys of Meanus. They had a dedicated song - 'Come Out and Vote O'Donoghue' - which they sang down the phone to him.

The song composed by Veronica Twomey Callinan and sung by her father, Harry Twomey, will be the centrepiece of the campaign launch tomorrow night in Adare.

The builder and tractor enthusiast has been a member of Limerick City and County Council since 2014. He is delighted to be celebrated in song.
