Live Leaders' Debate scores strongly with viewers

An average of 568,000 viewers tuned into the RTÉ Claire Byrne Live Leaders' Debate at some stage on Monday night.

Byrne has been praised for bringing the politicians to heel in her no-nonsense two-hour show, which was staged live from the University of Limerick. RTÉ said the numbers watching equated to nearly half the people watching television in the Republic of Ireland at the time - 48pc audience share.

It also generated 21,000 live streams, with people logging on to the RTÉ Player International from 60 countries around the world.

RTÉ's live reaction programme, 'The Spin Room', presented by David McCullagh, also proved popular with an average of 238,000 viewers tuning in until after midnight.
