Reacting to the post-election fall-out, the panel of Ahern, Nora Owen and Pat Rabbitte, all agreed that whatever the make-up of the next government, an election in 2017 is the realistic scenario.

"Fine Gael and Fianna Fail in coalition is the most likely if we want a stable government," said Rabbitte.  "But it's difficult to see how business will be done."

"A reverse Tallaght strategy might work," added Owen.  "But it would probably only last for one budget before disagreements arise and an election will come again."

Bertie Ahern agreed, adding,

"We're in unprecedented and uncharted waters that needs imaginative solutions to make it work; otherwise, we're looking at another election."
