Fianna Fáil is to deliver almost 500,000 leaflets to homes across Dublin in the coming days as it turns its election focus on the capital.

Micheál Martin's party are pumping a significant proportion of their election budget into the Dublin area, where they currently have no TDs.

The party is battling to regain seats in a number of constituencies, including one-time strongholds it has always been guaranteed seats by the likes of Brian Lenihan, Seamus Brennan and Bertie Ahern.

The capital is seen as a key electoral battleground, with Fianna Fáil having to make a significant impact if it is to stay ahead of Sinn Féin in terms of seats in the next Dáil.

Party sources told the Irish Independent there is now a major push for Dublin after internal polling suggested the party is in with a chance in a number of constituencies.

The leaflet attacks Fine Gael, claiming it is to blame for growing inequality and the pressures on family budgets. "Even Labour admits this," it reads.

A Fianna Fáil source said: "Making progress in the capital is obviously important to the party's recovery."
