Richard Boyd Barrett will be put forward by the Anti-Austerity Alliance and People Before Profit as their nominee for Taoiseach today.

The group met late last night to select their candidate.

Mr Boyd Barrett served in the last Dáil and was a member of the Right2Change movement that has campaigned against water charges.

The decision by AAA-PBP to put forward their own nominee means the group will not support Gerry Adams despite the fact Sinn Féin has the biggest block of Right2Change TDs. Right2Change was established as an attempt to bring together left-wing groups in the hope they would have enough TDs to form a government.

Ruth Coppinger, Paul Murphy and Mick Barry of AAA met with Mr Boyd Barrett, Bríd Smith and Gino Kenny of PBP for several hours in Dublin yesterday.

It means that there will now be four nominations for Taoiseach when the Dáil sits, although none are likely to have the numbers to succeed.
