A man was rushed to hospital last night with serious injuries after being hit by a car in Ballyfermot in Dublin.

The victim, who is in his 70s, was knocked down on Ballyfermot Road just before midnight.

The man was crossing the road at a pedestrian crossing opposite a row of shops and a pub when he was hit by a car driving towards the city.

Passing pedestrians and motorists rushed to his aid as he lay unconscious on the road and the emergency services were called.

A Dublin Fire Brigade ambulance went to the scene and put St James's hospital on notice before transferring the man there.

He underwent surgery overnight and was described as being in a critical condition today.
