AN elderly man was killed when the car he was driving was involved in a head-on collision at a crossroads.
Four people, including a child, travelling in the other car were injured in the accident about 3km from Bandon in west Cork. It happened on the Kilbrittain road shortly after 6.30pm.
A man in his early 80s, who was the sole occupant of his car, suffered multiple injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene before he could be transferred to Cork University Hospital.
He was said to be from the area and was travelling home when the collision occurred.
It is understood four other people were injured.
However, none of those injuries were described as life-threatening.
The road was closed to allow accident investigators to begin their examination of the scene.
Bandon gardai appealed for anyone who may have witnessed the collision to contact them.
