Elderly man dies in housefire

An elderly man has died following a housefire in Co Donegal. James "Jimmy" Campbell was tragically killed in the incident.

A caller to the house alerted the fire service to the blaze, which happened at around 2pm yesterday afternoon.

Firefighters managed to get into the house and took him from the building, however the man was pronounced dead at the scene, at 2.22pm yesterday afternoon.

It is understood he lived alone and nobody else was injured in the blaze.

He is believed to be a widower, and did not have children, according to local sources.

Two units of the Donegal Fire Service from Glenties and Dungloe attended the fire at a house in Glassaghbeg, Cloghan.

A local source said that he had just left a nursing home a few weeks prior to the tragedy, adding that his wife passed away about two years ago.

Gardaí from Ballybofey Garda Station responded to the incident.

A postmortem will take place at Letterkenny University Hospital.

He is believed to have relatives living in the area.
