AN ELDERLY man has died after being struck by a van near a hospital.

The man, who was in his 70s, was hit by the van while walking on the Castlepollard Road outside the Midland Regional Hospital in Mullingar at around 3.15pm yesterday.

The male driver was unharmed.

Gardai said the dead man was taken to the nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead. His name will not be released until his family have been notified. Anyone who was in the area of the hospital between 3pm and 3.30pm is asked to contact Mullingar garda station.

Meanwhile, a schoolgirl is in a stable condition in hospital following a road collision near the Westmeath-Cavan border.

The incident happened Wednesday at 4.20pm when she had just climbed off a bus at Kilgolagh Cross on the Kilcogy to Finea Road. It is understood the girl was crossing the road when she was struck by a car.

Westmeath County Councillor Paddy Hill said the local community hoped the teen would make a speedy recovery. "Everyone is praying and hoping that the girl will make a full recovery," he added.
