Elderly man (82) killed in horrific crash in west Cork

Gardai are increasingly worried about an elderly man's well-being
The accident occured on the Bandon to Kilbrittain road

AN ELDERLY man was killed in an horrific head-on collision in west Cork which also left three people injured.

The accident, on the Bandon-Kilbrittain Road, occurred shortly after 6.30pm less than 3km outside the coastal village.

The accident involved a collision between two cars at a cross-road.

An 82 year old man suffered multiple injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene before he could be transferred to Cork University Hospital (CUH).

The man is from the area and is understood to have been on his way home when the collision occurred.

He was the only occupant of one vehicle while an adult and two children were in the second car.

The adult and two children were treated for shock and minor injuries.

None of the injuries involved are life-threatening.

Gardai closed the road to allow for accident investigators to begin their examination of the scene.

The damaged vehicle will be removed and taken to a Garda yard for examination.

Motorists have been urged to avoid the area and to use the traffic diversions now in place.

Bandon Gardai appealed for anyone who may have witnessed the collision to contact them at (023) 8852200.

Gardai declined to identify the deceased until all relatives are notified.
