Eight million illegal cigarettes seized in cross-border raid

CUSTOMS officers and police on both sides of the Border were involved in the seizure of a massive shipment of illegal cigarettes as they were being loaded from a trailer into a warehouse, writes Tom Brady.
The haul of eight million cigarettes was confiscated following a security operation in Forkhill, Co Armagh.
The customs officials, working closely with the UK Border Agency and the PSNI, raided a commercial premises as the shipment was being offloaded from a 40ft trailer.
The shipment, which originated in Dubai, was worth an estimated £1.7m (€1.9m) in lost duty to the Northern exchequer. Two men, arrested as part of the investigation, were later released on bail.
Customs officials and gardai carried out a surveillance operation after the container arrived at Dublin port earlier in the week, before it was seized on Tuesday evening.
