Top honours for Garda Commissioner

Garda Commissioner Nóirín O'Sullivan beamed with pride as she received her honorary degree from Ulster University for distinguished services to public service and policing.

Ms O'Sullivan was accompanied at the ceremony by her sons, Ciaran and Eoin.

She was among 12 people who received a Doctor of Laws (LLD). having displayed "leadership, progressive thinking and integrity".

The former Deputy Commissioner of the force was appointed Garda Commissioner last November, following the retirement of Martin Callinan.

It's the first time in the history of the State that An Garda Síochána has been led by a woman.
