Education Minister Jan O'Sullivan has urged teachers to vote 'Yes' in the upcoming same-sex marriage referendum.
She took the opportunity while addressing this week's teacher conferences.
At the Teachers' Union of Ireland (TUI) event, Ms O'Sullivan said she hoped that teachers would "join me on May 22, and declare that all our citizens are equal".
She said having spoken about education's role in delivering equality, she felt obliged to comment on the issue before concluding her address.
The minister cited the words of civil rights campaigner Martin Luther King, about hate adding darkness to a night.
She said that the referendum provided a wonderful opportunity to "return the glisten of the stars to a night sky that is too dark for many people".
