Students paid €4m grants by mistake

STUDENTS received grants totalling €4m despite not being entitled to the money, during the first disastrous year of the Student Universal Support Ireland (SUSI) authority.
As many as 850 students were paid maintenance grants for which they were not eligible, amounting to €1.9m.
SUSI also handed out a further €2.16m in overpayments which the Department of Education is now trying to recoup.
The third level grant system was plagued by problems after responsibility was centralised in 2012/13. The wrongly issued payments have only now been revealed in a report by the Comptroller and Auditor General. It also said there is no way of telling if the system has actually cut administration costs.
