Heading into his fifth and final year in college, Masters student Luke Barrett says it is "inevitable" he will have to begin the year on a friend's couch.

Luke (22), from Milford, Co Donegal, is finishing the second year of his two-year Masters in education course and will be splitting his time between lectures in NUI Maynooth and teaching practice in a Dublin school.

"I'm a Masters student. This is my fifth year in Maynooth. I won't be getting up to any parties. I'm here to study, and yet it is impossible to get somewhere," he said.

Luke has been searching for a place since July, but says he has been frustrated by massive increases in rent from last year.

He says that "thankfully" he has a friend living in Maynooth, and adds that in "all likelihood" he will be sleeping on his couch at the start of his final year.
