The cost of sending one child through the Irish education system has risen to €45,000, according to a new report.

The report found that parents are underestimating the annual cost of sending their children to school.

Furthermore, the overall cost also risen in recent years.

According to the Zurich’s Cost of Education in Ireland 2017 study, it costs €766 a year to keep a child in primary school.

This includes budgeting €165 for after-school activities, €110 for lunches and €87 for trips.

The average cost of school clothing for a child is €65, while shoes could cost €59.

They report that it costs €6,128 for a full stay in primary school for each child.

Costs only increase when it comes to secondary school and the report finds that parents are cutting back on holidays, summer camps and clothing to cover these expenses.

This adds up to €1,629 for a year in secondary school and the report places a €7,734 price-tag on the lifetime cost of sending a child to their Leaving Cert.

The average cost of grinds (€310) is one cost that is added to the list. The cost of books, reported to be €200, is more than twice the cost of books in primary school.

Depending on where a student will live for their college years, the cost can change dramatically.

The report found that 60pc of third level students are living at home to help bring down the cost of college.

It places annual college spends between €4,340 and €8,206 – or a four year spend of between €17,360 and €32,824.

The report recommends parents start saving as early as possible to help cover these rising costs.
