Classroom assistants to be fast-tracked

Securing classroom assistants for children with behavioural needs will be fast-tracked under new plans.
The system will allow teachers make the decision, instead of the current practice which can result in a referral to the Child Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAHMS), and subsequent lengthy delays.
Minister of State at the Department of Health, Kathleen Lynch described the current system as "chaotic", and said it made no sense. She said she believed teachers should have a greater say in the process as they are "experts in the area".
She added discussions were ongoing to ensure a "more clear-cut, clearly defined system".
