CAO offers should come on same day as results, say principals

The Leaving Certificate results and CAO offers should be released on the same day to reduce unnecessary stress and to give greater certainty to students, according to second-level principals.
Clive Byrne, director of the National Association of Principals and Deputy Principals (NAPD), said releasing both results and college offers on the one day would reduce the stresses associated with results day and the college application process.
"We currently expect students to have to go through the anxiety of waiting for their exam results initially, followed by several more days of nail-biting while they wait to see if they have got their desired college place. It makes much more sense to release both on the same day, thereby reducing unnecessary stress," he said.
Mr Byrne said with huge advances in technological capabilities, at a minimum, it was worth exploring with all stakeholders the viability of introducing such a system.
About 47,000 of the 58,500 Leaving Cert candidates applied to the CAO and the offers will be released at 6am next Monday.
