The Association of Secondary Teachers’ Ireland (ASTI) has appointed a long-time union activist as its new general secretary, to replace Mr Pat King who retires at the end of the year.

Kieran Christie is a teacher at St Attracta’s Community School, Tubbercurry, Co. Sligo, a former honorary national organiser, a former member of the union’s Standing Committee,  and a  member of the Teaching Council.

Mr Christie’s appointment comes in a week in which ASTI members rejected  proposals for reform of the Junior Cycle throwing the change plans into turmoil. The other second-level union, the TUI, voted in favour of the package.

The appointment of a working teacher as general secretary marks a break with the practice of selecting a candidate who has worked as a full-time union official.

The union’s central executive committee held a special meeting today to ratify the appointment of Mr Christie.
