East meets West for Galway Hooker

EAST met West as Abu Dhabi welcomed the first ever Galway Hooker into the Arabian Gulf.

The Nora Bheag (left) is almost 100 years old, but undertook a voyage from the West of Ireland lasting eight weeks -- however the hooker was shipped out in its container instead of taking to the high seas unaided.

Nora Bheag arrived in perfect condition for the maiden voyage by a traditional Irish sailing craft in Middle Eastern waters at the hands of owner Coilin Hernon and family, along with a crew of Mike and Sue Fahy and founder of the Galway Hooker Association Padraic de Bhaldraithe.
