Earthquake survivor dies in cottage blaze

A 62-YEAR-OLD man who died in a house fire had survived an earthquake in Chile three years ago which claimed the lives of more than 85 people.

Jim Biggs, pictured, was alone in his three-bedroom cottage on Clare Island, Co Mayo, when a fire broke out at 10.30pm on Sunday.

His sister, Catherine McGrath, paid tribute to him as "an island to himself", adding she believed an open fire in the house may have caused the blaze.

He narrowly escaped injury in the earthquake which struck Chile in 2010. "To think he survived that devastating earthquake, and then this happens to him," Ms McGrath added.
