E coli found in cheese cargo
Around 22 tonnes of Irish cheddar cheese has been quarantined in South Africa after unacceptable levels of E coli bacteria were found in a shipment. The cargo was shipped into Durban Port in August and isolated upon arrival because safety officials deemed the cargo "too risky".
Yesterday, port health spokesman Chris Maxon said the container would be returned to Ireland. "The cheese has been sealed off, and will not be allowed into South Africa," he said.
The Irish Dairy Board last night refuted claims that the cheese was "too risky for human consumption".
