The Supersonic is light, colourful and cuts down on noise. The device, which cost €50m and three years to develop, boasts a new type of digital motor which has pushed noise to a sound frequency "beyond the audible range for humans".

Its thermostat promises to do away with the risk of burning, and it has 'air multiplier' technology to make it speedier and more efficient.

But this isn't a budget item - it will cost €399 when available here in the coming months.

Journalist Eimear Rabbitt became one of the first people in Ireland to test the Supersonic at Dylan Bradshaw's Dublin hair salon last night. You can see how it performed with an exclusive video on Independent.ie today.
