Gardaí have launched a probe after drunk students smashed up a college lecture theatre - with one urinating on the floor.

Revellers from Mary Immaculate College in Limerick's South Circular Road, marking their annual 'Raise and Give' (Rag) week, entered a lecture room and damaged furniture and computer equipment.

Gardaí at Henry Street are studying CCTV footage in an effort to identify the offenders, who could face expulsion from the teacher-training college.

It is understood that Mary Immaculate College will now reconsider its policy of allowing a bar on campus during a week that traditionally was focused on raising money for charity.

It's understood three students were involved.

In a statement, union president James Deegan said: "It is unfortunate this incident happened during what was an otherwise trouble-free week."

He added that the union was working with college authorities and the gardaí to identify the culprits.

A spokesperson for An Garda Síochána confirmed an investigation was under way.

No arrests have yet been made.
