Gardai have fined a motorist for driving with four young children who were not wearing seatbelts.

Gardai said the four children under the age of 12 had no restraints as the seven-seater car had the back seats folded down for shopping.

A fixed charge penalty notice will be issued following the incident, according to gardai.

Not wearing a seatbelt is found to be the second biggest cause of road deaths behind speeding.

Under legislation, drivers are required to ensure that under 17s wear an appropriate restraint system.
