Dragon's support for former den colleague

Ken Sweeney Entertainment Editor

'DRAGON'S Den' star Sean Gallagher has offered words of encouragement to his former TV colleague Sarah Newman.

Last week it emerged that DJ Carey Enterprises -- of which Newman and her partner, hurling star DJ Carey, are the directors -- is €1.7m in debt and facing possible collapse.

However, her fellow Dragon from the RTE programme said that they are typical of people whose businesses are being challenged at the moment.

"It's a traumatic time, not just in business but for people personally as well," Gallagher said.

"I sent Sarah an email just wishing her and DJ the best. What I say generally to entrepreneurs is in Ireland we have a negative attitude to businesses that get into difficulty. In America, if you fail it's a badge of honour, a stepping stone to your ultimate success; but in Ireland we tend to brand people a failure unfairly."

The 48-year-old was speaking at the launch of 'Generation Next', a competition in which third-level students are invited to submit ideas on how to introduce entrepreneurship as a subject in primary school classrooms.

The new eight-part series of 'Dragons' Den' starts this Sunday on RTE1.
