Dozen councils on flood alert

MORE than a dozen county councils were put on flood alert by Met Eireann last night after 70mm of rain was forecast to fall in parts of Munster, Connacht, south Leinster and the midlands up to noon today.

Although most parts can expect between 30-50mm, there could be torrential downpours due to heavy thunderstorms, said Met Eireann forecaster Eoin Sherlock.

Overnight temperatures were also expected to stay warm -- between 13C and 15C -- which will also increase the likelihood of heavy, thundery downpours.
