THE FAMILY of Ireland's first cystic fibrosis sufferer to receive a double lung transplant were left "heartbroken" after he lost his battle for life yesterday.
Paul Minchin (22), from Bagenalstown, Co Carlow, suffered from cystic fibrosis from birth.
Paul (right) received a double lung transplant at the Mater Hospital four years ago and until last year was doing well. His condition began to deteriorate and he had been in hospital since last May.
Last week, his body rejected his new lungs. He died in hospital at 5pm yesterday.
His brother Sean last night said his family is "heartbroken" but his brother is "peaceful now anyway tonight".
Sean described his brother as so brave "he was almost superhuman".
"We'll miss him. He was very, very brave," he said.
