Dogs banned on highest mountain

Anne Lucey

DOGS will no longer be allowed on Ireland's highest mountain.

The ban on Carrauntuohill in Kerry has been imposed after previous appeals to keep dogs under control to safeguard sheep have been ignored.

Dozens of sheep have been killed or injured on MacGillycuddy's Reeks, some dying from exhaustion after being chased by eager dogs let off their leash.

The ban is "a last resort" and snares have also been put in place off the main tracks to trap unwelcome dogs, according to South Kerry Development Partnership.
