Doctor who built a life in property
DR Mary Pat O'Donnell (56) has long left the psychiatrist's chair behind her, forsaking life as a doctor for the family's property empire.
Mary O'Beirn was a student of medicine in NUI Galway in the 1970s when she met her husband Brian, who was studying law.
She is still referred to by her doctor title but she has not been registered with the Medical Council of Ireland for some time.
If registered it would entitle her to work as a doctor here but her omission from the register indicates that she has moved on from medicine.
They returned to the Galway university in 2007 when they were leading lights at the NUI Galway eighth annual Gala Banquet in the Radisson SAS Hotel.
The theme of the evening was volunteerism and Mr O'Donnell was honoured with an Alumni award for Law, Public Service and Government. Another recipient was RTE broadcaster Sean O' Rourke.
