Diving into books as Kilkenny festival gets into gear

THE banks of the Barrow are already starting to get a lot more crowded as bookworms prepare for the eighth annual Graiguenamanagh 'Town of Books' Festival.
A book and treasure trail is one of the activities planned from September 16-18 in the medieval Co Kilkenny town, allowing shoppers to discover thousands of bargain, rare and specialised books from all over Ireland and Britain.
Visitors for the event will include presidential candidate Michael D Higgins, who will read from his newly published book 'New and Selected Poems' and sign copies in the local scout hall.
Festival chairman John O'Shea said: "There will be a fantastic atmosphere in Graiguenamanagh during the festival when the streets of our town are full with people, young and old, strolling with books in hand nipping in and out of the bookstores.
"You could not find anything more idyllic than reading a book by the River Barrow with the autumn sun setting over Brandon Hill as the church bells ring from the 13th Century Duiske Abbey," he added.
Our photo by Nick Vereker shows some bookworms diving into their reading already.
