The murder victim was aged in his 20s and had dark brown hair.

One investigator said that, at this early stage in their inquiries, they were leaning towards the possibility that he was Eastern European.

The torso was found wrapped in heavy plastic in a suitcase floating in the Grand Canal near the village of Ardclough, Co Kildare, on Saturday.

Gardaí believe it was dumped there some time between last Thursday and 3.30pm on Saturday when it was spotted by walkers.

A post-mortem examination last night found no signs of gunshot or stab wounds.
