Discovery of warhead 'has saved lives'

A ROCKET launcher and warhead discovered by police investigating dissident republicans were "intended to kill".

Officers found the weapons while searching a house in Hawthorn Street, west Belfast.

Police said the incident was sparked after the discovery of a suspect explosive device at a property in the area.

"These weapon systems are clearly intended to kill and we should be in no doubt that the recovery of these items has saved lives," a spokesman said.

Dissidents have been linked to a series of attempts to kill members of the security forces, including soldiers, police and a prison officer.

Meanwhile, part of the M5 motorway near Newtownabbey was closed in both directions last night after the discovery of another suspicious object.
