Devoted to her family and farm, Joe Higgins's mother dies, aged 95
THE removal is taking place this evening of Ellen Higgins, mother of Socialist Party leader and Dublin West TD Joe Higgins.
Mrs Higgins, who was 95, passed away at the West Kerry Community Hospital in Dingle, Co Kerry, yesterday.
Until recently, she had lived at the family home in Ballineetig, Lispole, and was described by friends as a very independent woman who loved farming and her family.
Mrs Higgins was fiercely proud of her son Joe's achievements in politics. She was by his side when he was elected to the European Parliament in 2009 and had travelled from Kerry to the count centre in Dublin.
The family had gathered in Dingle during Easter to celebrate her 95th birthday.
Mrs Higgins is predeceased by her husband Denis and also buried three of her children – her sons Liam, a former Kerry footballer and broadcaster with Raidio na Gaeltachta, and Denis Og and daughter Brid.
Denis's son Noel, who is serving with the amy in the Lebanon, is travelling home for the funeral and Liam's daughter, Jackie, is coming home from Australia.
Mrs Higgins is also survived by her sons Joe and Tom, and daughters Mary, Nora, Terry and Helen, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Her remains will be removed from O'Connor's Funeral Home to St Mary's Church in Dingle tonight at 8pm. She will be buried in Garfinny Cemetery on Friday, following a funeral Mass at 11am.
Mr Higgins's Dail office will remain closed until after the funeral.
