Details of CAP payments to farmers ' private', says court
THE details of how much cash Irish farmers receive from the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) were removed from websites yesterday after the European Court of Justice ruled it could be a breach of privacy to publish the information.
Farm groups were jubilant about the decision as they have always claimed that publication of these details was a "snooper's charter".
The court ruled that publication of individual CAP payments by the Department of Agriculture and throughout the EU was partially invalid.
Fine Gael MEP Mairead McGuinness said the EU would now have to examine a way of dealing with the issue of transparency for taxpayers.
