Deputies will now 'clock in'

TDs will have to repay any overpayments in expenses from the start of this year, when a new system comes into force.

The new Oireachtas expenses system will include some form of clocking in by TDs, where they will have to verify attendance in the Dail to claim expenses.

It will also mean TDs having to provide receipts for expenses.

Once the system is introduced, any payments made in 2010 under the old rates will be backdated.

A TD who got paid more than he should have will have to refund the extra money.

After protracted negotiations with the body in charge of running Leinster House, Finance Minister Brian Lenihan is finalising the details of the new system.

Backbenchers had objected to a clocking in.
