Fine Gael TD Denis Naughten has lost the party whip after failing to support the party in a vote on the downgrading of Roscommon Hospital's emergency department last night.

Government chief whip Paul Kehoe confirmed that the whip had been automatically removed from the Roscommon/Leitrim TD due after he voted against the Government, in accordance with the party's rules.

Mr Naughton said he would have liked to have had the chance of meeting of the Fine Gael parliamentary party to explain to colleagues his decision but instead the whip was removed automatically.

It is also likely the he will lose his chair of the Oireachtas health committee which commands a €10,000 a year stipend.

His surprise move came at the last minute last night when he described the move as an “extremely difficult decision.”

His fellow Roscommon Fine Gael colleague voted in favour of the Government’s move.

The A&E department of the hospital will close on Monday.
