ARTS Minister Jimmy Deenihan has insisted he was not avoiding protesters and was called away on business that prevented him from meeting with nurses' representatives at his clinic.
About 100 protesters that included student nurses at the Institute of Technology in Tralee, and representatives of the Psychiatric Nurses Association and the Irish Nurses and Midwives Association marched on the Grand Hotel on Tralee's Denny Street, where Mr Deenihan was due to hold his clinic.
Witnesses claim when his car approached, they saw him glance out the window before the car continued without stopping.
A spokesman said time pressure was the reason Mr Deenihan could not attend the clinic.
