What is Eircode?

It will be Ireland's first ever postcode system. Unlike in other countries, individual properties will have their own unique code, rather than clusters of properties.

How will it work?

Some 2.2 million properties will be assigned a seven-digit code. The first three digits are a routing key to aid the delivery of mail. The final four digits will be random and will be unique.

Will every property get one?

Houses, apartments, duplexes, businesses, factories, office blocks and even halting sites - as long as they are permanent - will get one. However, bedsits and travelling caravans won't.

Will I need to use it?

Eircode will be optional. But the reality is it will probably become ubiquitous in a few years.
