AN Irish student who fell to his death from a motorway bridge during a Spanish rock festival had planned a special phone call home to his family next Sunday to mark his 21st birthday.

Shane O'Connor's parents, Joe and Ann-Marie, travelled to Zaragoza yesterday to make arrangements for the return of their son's body.

The family from Boherbue on the Cork-Kerry border were yesterday said by neighbours to be "absolutely devastated" by the freak accident.

A neighbour revealed that the student was to ring his family next Sunday to mark his 21st after plans to travel home especially for the weekend had apparently fallen through.

Shane's parents will identify his remains in Zaragoza -- and the Irish Embassy in Madrid is offering consular assistance over the repatriation of the student's remains.

That is expected to take several days to arrange and the Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology student is likely to be buried within 48 hours of his 21st birthday. His body is expected home by Friday.
