Death-crash pilot not home in 10 years

AN Irish pilot who died in a plane crash in the US had last returned home almost 10 years ago for his mother's funeral, his aunt has said.

Cyril Lavin (51), originally from Dysart, Co Westmeath, died when his light aircraft crashed into the sea off New York.

His friend Dr Andrew Messana (72) was also killed in the accident last Saturday.

American officials have begun an investigation to determine the cause of the crash.

His aunt Mary McLavin said that Mr McLavin had been living in America for a long time.

"I knew him well when he was much younger. He was a very affable young man, always very headstrong, but very likeable," she said.
