The death of a soldier found with a gunshot wound inside Government Buildings is not being treated as suspicious, writes Fiona Ellis.
The 50-year-old corporal was found at around 11.30pm on Monday night in the Merrion Street complex with a single gunshot wound to the head and was pronounced dead at the scene.
He was on duty at the time. Gardai and military police are investigating and will carry out a technical examination; however, at this stage the death is not being treated as suspicious. The name of the solder has not yet been released as members of his family are abroad and are still being contacted.
It is likely the corporal would have been attached to 2 brigade, MP company, based in Cathal Brugha barracks in Rathmines, Dublin 6.
The company has responsibility for security at Government Buildings and are armed with Heckler and Koch USP 9mm semi-automatic pistols and Steyr assault rifles.
Lieutenant General Sean McCann, chief of staff of the Defence Forces, extended his deepest sympathies to the family of the dead man.
