Dawn raids: 24 arrested in heroin and ecstasy swoop in Waterford

UP to two dozen have been arrested in the South East as part of a major Garda swoop targeting heroin and ecstasy dealing in Waterford city.

Over 80 Gardai from local stations and the National Drug Units were involved in the raids.



The 24 arrested - 23 men and one woman - are aged between 17 and 47.



They face a total of 94 charges



They are due before a special sitting of Waterford District Court at 10pm this evening.



Undercover Gardaí have been sourcing drugs from dealers in the city suburb of Ballybeg and other areas for the past six months in what is called Operation Raptor. .



It was set up to target the top heroin and ecstasy dealing gangs in the South East.



In pre-dawn raids, the Gardai searched over 20 homes and arrested 24 people.



The suspects are being detained at Waterford, Dungarvan and Tramore Garda Stations.
