Date-rape drugs in tragic Nicola's body

Paul Murphy Tokyo

Blood samples from tragic Wexford student Nicola Furlong, pictured, contained two drugs previously implicated in date-rape cases, her murder trial in Japan heard.

The details emerged on the opening day of the trial of Richard Hinds (19) from Memphis, US, over her murder at the Keio Plaza Hotel, Tokyo, on May 24 last.

Mr Hinds denied that he was the cause of Nicola's death, saying he had no "intent, motive or reason to hurt, harm or kill her". He admitted, "I did lightly press her neck", but told the packed courtroom: "I do not believe I was the cause of her death because the pressure was too light."

Nicola's parents Andrew and Angela and her sister Andrea sat in the courtroom as judges were shown stills from a CCTV camera in the elevator of the Keio Plaza, which showed Nicola – apparently unconscious – being brought up to Mr Hinds's room in a hotel wheelchair.
