AUTHOR Maidhc Dainin O Se, the father of Rose of Tralee and ‘Daily Show’ host Daithi O Se, died suddenly today.
Mr O Se, who was 71, passed away at the family home in Cillchuain, Ballydavid in west Kerry.
A well-known musician and writer, Mr O Se was one of the most prolific writers in the Irish language and had published 19 books, some of which were translated into English.
His first book ‘A Thig Na Tit Orm’ is well known to thousands of Leaving Cert students who study Irish.
The autobiographical account of his life growing up in west Kerry and as an emigrant in the United States ultimately replaced ‘Peig’ on the Leaving Certificate curriculum in the 1990s.
Arts and Heritage Minister Jimmy Deenihan said Mr O Se was one of the country’s most important writers, following in the footsteps of Tomas O Criomhtain and Muiris O Suilleabhain.
He is predeceased by his daughter Deirdre and survived by his wife Caitlin, sons Caoimhin, Danny and Daithi and daughter Mary Ellen.
