A column in the Irish Daily Mail which claimed feuding was the main expression of modern Traveller culture has been condemned as “shameful” by the Equality Authority.

The Equality Authority said it was greatly concerned by the tone of journalist Brenda Power’s column which accused travellers of trying to “milk the State for all they’re worth” in her weekly column.

And she claimed that men in the Traveller community were “lazy, violent, drunken and misgynistic”.

The authority said it was concerned about claim that all members of Traveller communities behaved in the same negative way.

The Irish Daily Mail should remove the article from its website, the authority warned.

It said the article was false and designed to be “demeaning” and “hurtful”.

Irish Daily Mail’s group editor Sebastian Hamilton defended the column, citing the right of citizens to debate and have free speech.
